Transitional Bridge Program

Empowering At-Risk Students from Grades 4–12

Why This Program Matters

"One key element is parental involvement. In my experience, students can’t reach their full
potential without a support system at home. If we want change, we must include families in
the process."

Hello, I’m Dr. Trudi Harris-Johnson. With over 50 years of experience in education, I
developed the Transitional Bridge Program — a summer and school-year program
designed for at-risk students, with a strong parental engagement component.

This initiative was created under the guidance of Dr. Harvey Allen at Monmouth University
and with support from Dr. Jim Stefansquis at the Ocean Township School District.

What I observed over the years is that students — particularly around 4th grade — often
begin to lose motivation. They stop paying attention, they disengage, and sometimes conflict
arises in the classroom. The root of these challenges can be cognitive, emotional, or social.
Many students today are at risk in various ways, but some face deeper challenges than
others. That’s why I created a program that not only meets academic needs but also helps
shape positive behavior, self-image, and critical life skills.

One key element is parental involvement. In my experience, students can’t reach their full
potential without a support system at home. If we want change, we must include families in
the process.

Program Structure
In the summer, students engage in core academic subjects — math, English, and reading —
paired with enrichment and career exploration.

Math is taught through real-world lenses like engineering, accounting, or banking.
English involves professionals like journalists or editors to show the practical value of writing
and communication.

Reading is elevated using sources like The New York Times or The Star Ledger, with
comprehension questions to build vocabulary and critical thinking.

We also emphasize social experiences, such as college campus visits. This exposes
students to ESL programs, food services, classroom dynamics, and other career paths. We
want them to see what’s possible beyond their current environment.

Hands-On Implementation
When your school or district adopts this program, you’re not left to figure it out alone. I
personally — or a trained representative — will:
• Present the program to stakeholders and teachers in an in-service session.
• Return mid-semester to discuss student selection, review engagement, and involve parents.
• Support the hiring process for summer program staff (in person or via Zoom).
• Conduct a closing session to evaluate outcomes and determine next steps.

This isn’t a one-time sale. It’s a partnership. Our goal is to ensure continuity — so that
students transitioning from 4th to 5th grade continue building upon the foundation we lay.

Closing Message
This is a program born from real classroom experience. It addresses academic gaps,
emotional resilience, and future planning — and it works because we include the whole child
and the family.

I hope you see my vision — and that you’ll invite me to help bring it to life in your district.

Thank you,
Dr. Trudi Harris-Johnson
